Forced marriage is haram and invalid

Published October 19, 2013 by AbdulJabarAzimi

Forced marriage is haram and invalid:

A young girl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him that her father had married her off against her will. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the choice to either stay married or walk away from it. (Abu Dawud)

The majority of scholars derived from this that the contract cannot be nullified because it never even existed. Imam Abu Hanifa (rA) saw that it would become valid if the girl approved. Either way, no scholar has ever allowed forced marriages in Islam.

Haya (Modesty)

Haya (Shyness) is an attribute which encourages
believers to avoid anything distasteful. It plays a
huge role in the lives of Muslims because it is a
very important part of our Iman (faith/belief).
However Haya “shyness” is not just something
regarding women but also an attribute that
believing men should have, for it is an indication of
their fear of Allah and an indication of the value of
their Deen.
We often find that shyness, humility and
bashfulness are frowned upon by our society as a
weakness or a lack of confidence when, in fact,
these are qualities of a dignified upright human
being, who is conscious of his actions and his
responsibilities in life.
The Hadeeth clearly states how much importance
this attribute has been given.

Know that honor is an honor to all wise people, and that adultery is dishonorable to all nations, even if some called it freedom. Know that adultery is also done with the eyes by seeing, with the ears by listening, and with the mouth by kissing, as was mentioned in a Hadith related by Imam Muslim.

Your happiness is in being an obedient and believing daughter, a loyal and generous wife and a pious and merciful mother. Read the rest of this entry →
